Americans on Trump After Nearly 100 Days in Power

In under 100 days, President Donald Trump has undermined his polling strength on two key issues critical to his re-election: the economy and immigration.
On the economy, the most decisive issue of the 2024 election, Trump's polling has hit an all-time low. A Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Wednesday shows just 37% of Americans approve of Trump's handling of the economy — his lowest rating since his first presidency. A Pew Research Center survey found his overall approval has dropped to 40%, with confidence in his economic leadership falling to 45%, the lowest since tracking began in 2019. New Gallup polling shows that, for the first time since at least 2001, a majority of Americans believe their economic situation is worsening.
On immigration, Trump remains in a relatively stronger position, but cracks are starting to show. A new YouGov/Economist poll reveals that his immigration approval rating has dropped 10 points since April 16, now standing at 45%, amid an escalating legal battle over his deportation tactics. 78% of Americans believe that Trump should abide by court orders.
A Harvard Youth Poll has revealed that young Americans are increasingly losing faith in government. Moreover, only 15% believe that the country is heading in the right direction.
Abortion Bans Likely to Increase Pregnancy Death Risk
Pregnant individuals in states with abortion bans are nearly twice as likely to die during pregnancy or shortly after childbirth, a report released on Wednesday revealed. Black women in these states face the highest risk, being 3.3 times more likely to die than White women.
The Gender Equity Policy Institute, which issued the report, found that pregnancy-related death rates have decreased in states that protect abortion access but have risen in Texas, the largest state with a ban. The report indicates that Black, White, and Latina pregnant individuals are all at increased risk of death in abortion-ban states compared to those in states where abortion rights are protected.
Health care providers have long warned that abortion bans endanger pregnant patients' lives. Despite narrow exceptions for cases where abortion is required to save a person's life, doctors have reported that the language of these laws is often vague and confusing.
12 States Sue Trump Administration
Twelve states filed a lawsuit against the Donald Trump administration in the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York on Wednesday, seeking to block its tariff policy. The lawsuit claims the policy is unlawful and has disrupted the American economy, arguing that it was driven by President Trump’s “whims rather than the sound exercise of lawful authority”.
The attorneys general of Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, and Vermont filed the lawsuit to make the tariffs legally enforceable through the courts. The states contended that only Congress has the authority to legislate tariffs.
This follows a separate lawsuit filed last week by California, where Governor Gavin Newsom and the state attorney general accused the Trump administration of intensifying a trade war that has inflicted “immediate and irreparable harm” on the state’s economy.
