India-Pakistan Escalation

India carried out targeted military strikes against Pakistan, which responded with expected tit-for-tat blows following a militant attack in Kashmir last month that left 26 people dead. India issued a statement early Wednesday, describing the strikes as “a precise and restrained response” aimed to be “non-escalatory in nature”. The strikes targeted nine locations in Pakistan, according to Indian officials, marking the deepest breach of Pakistani territory since the 1971 war. What’s behind the ongoing conflict?

The strikes were quickly condemned by Pakistan. Officials reported that eight people were killed, including a child and two teenagers, with 35 others injured. Civilians recall the aftermath.

Responding to the attack, Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif on national television said, “India has shamelessly attacked the civilian population, and the attack will be answered accordingly.” Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued a statement, asserting, “Pakistan has every right to give a befitting reply to this act of war imposed by India, and a befitting reply is being given.” Is there a risk of war?

As world leaders called for calm, President Donald Trump said, “It’s a shame. We just heard about it just as we were walking in the doors of the Oval. I guess people knew something was going to happen based on a little bit of the past. They’ve been fighting for a long time, you know? They’ve been fighting for many, many decades, and centuries, actually, if you really think about it. No, I just hope it ends very quickly.”

Trump Meets Canada’s Carney

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited the White House on Tuesday for his first meeting with President Donald Trump, during which he bluntly told the U.S. president that Canada would never be for sale. Carney, who won the April 28 election with a promise to resist U.S. tariffs and discussions of annexation, later said he had also urged Trump to stop publicly referring to Canada as the 51st state.

During their meeting, Carney told Trump that Canada "is not for sale", nor will it ever be.  Trump, however, doubled down on his suggestion that Canada could benefit from becoming the 51st state, despite Carney’s firm stance that it would not happen

“I still believe that. But it takes two to tango, right?” Trump said, suggesting that Canada’s joining the U.S. could lead to major tax cuts. “It’s not for sale. It won’t be for sale ever, but the opportunity is in the partnership and what we can build together,” Carney said. To which Trump responded, “I say never say never. I’ve had many, many things that were not doable and they ended up being doable. Canada loves us and we love Canada. That’s I think the number one thing that’s important. But we’ll see. Over time, we’ll see what happens.” Watch

Curious Case of Real ID

After years of delays, travelers in the United States will now be required to present REAL ID-compliant identification when boarding domestic flights, marking a significant change for airport procedures nationwide. Starting Wednesday, certain standard driver’s licenses and other ID cards will no longer meet federal requirements for flying within the U.S. or accessing some federal facilities, according to the Department of Homeland Security. All you need to know.

In response, residents have rushed to motor vehicle offices across the country to upgrade their IDs before the deadline, with state officials warning of overcrowding and long lines.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said on Tuesday that travelers without a Real ID, passport, or other federally recognized ID will face additional security screening at U.S. airports starting Wednesday but can still fly. Her remarks reiterated the department's prior guidance as the Real ID law enforcement deadline approaches. Acceptable IDs include a Real ID with a star, U.S. passport, Global Entry card, Department of Defense ID, or permanent resident card, according to the TSA. Noem added that those without Real IDs "may be diverted to a different line, have an extra step, but people will be allowed to fly".
