Memorial Day Marred With Chaos As Storms Brew

Severe thunderstorms disrupted Memorial Day travel across the Southeast and central U.S. on Monday, unleashing damaging winds, heavy rains, and triggering tornado warnings in several states. It led to widespread flight delays and power outages during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.

More than 5,000 flights were delayed across the country, with the worst disruptions hitting airports in Texas and Colorado. Dallas Fort Worth International saw over 1,000 delays on Monday alone. Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental reported 600 delays, while Denver International saw nearly 1,000.

The storms also brought the threat of large hail, flash flooding, and possible tornadoes. Tornado warnings were issued in Texas, Alabama, and Mississippi, while parts of New Mexico and Oklahoma faced risks of strong winds and hail. Power outages mounted as the storms swept through. By Monday night, more than 29,000 customers were without power in both Texas and Mississippi, and another 14,000 were affected in Louisiana.

U.S. Envoy Says Gaza Ceasefire Deal on the Table

U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff told CNN a ceasefire-hostage deal is on the table, offering a potential path to end the war in Gaza. The proposal includes releasing half of the living and deceased hostages in exchange for a temporary ceasefire, followed by talks for a permanent resolution.

This comes after Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem met Israeli leaders on Sunday and Monday, reaffirming U.S. support despite policy tensions. She also honored two Israeli Embassy aides killed in last week's Washington shooting.

Amid reports of the ceasefire deal, Israeli strikes continued to kill dozens in Gaza. With the growing dissent from across the world, a U.S.- and Israel-backed food aid plan for Gaza began early.

27 Hospitalized After Truck Rams Into Liverpool Parade

A 53-year-old man was arrested Monday after allegedly driving into a crowd during Liverpool FC’s trophy parade, injuring over two dozen people. Police responded around 6 pm local time after a vehicle hit “a number of pedestrians,” Merseyside Police said.

Assistant Chief Constable Jennifer Sims confirmed the man was believed to be the driver. The incident is not considered terrorism, and no other suspects are being sought. “It is vital that people do not speculate or spread misinformation on social media,” Sims said, urging the public not to share distressing footage. David Kitchen of the North West Ambulance Service said 27 people, including four children, were taken to the hospital. Three patients are being treated for serious injuries, he added at the news conference. Video from the scene showed a large dark-colored vehicle suddenly veering into a crowd of thousands lining the streets of Liverpool.

Weigh In

International tourism to the U.S. is experiencing a significant decline in 2025, with projections indicating a 7% drop in spending compared to last year. Factors contributing to this downturn include political tensions, trade disputes, and safety concerns. Notably, Canadian travel has decreased sharply, influenced by tariffs and diplomatic strains. This decline poses challenges for the U.S. economy, particularly in sectors reliant on international visitors, such as hospitality and retail.
