U.S. Losses Trillions in Stock Market

U.S. companies saw trillions in market value erased on Thursday after President Donald Trump imposed sweeping “reciprocal” tariffs on foreign imports.

Stocks across nearly every sector plunged, marking the largest single-day drop since the COVID-19 crash five years ago. (Video) What do these tariffs mean for the economy and you?

Banks, retailers, airlines, tech firms, and clothing brands were among the hardest hit, as concerns grew that rising costs could curb consumer spending. Here’s a list of companies discussing raising prices after tariff announcements.

From everyday groceries to consumer goods — here’s how much tariffs would personally cost you.

However, Trump and his advisers dismissed the turmoil, expressing confidence that stocks would recover. In fact, J.D. Vance downplayed the immediate effect and said, “I frankly thought in some ways it could be worse in the markets, because this is a big transition. You saw the President said earlier today, it’s like a patient who was very sick, we did the operation, and now it’s time to make the patient better. And that’s exactly what we’re doing.”

As per JPMorgan Chief Economist Bruce Kasman, the tariffs could tip the U.S. — and possibly the world — into recession by 2025. “The risk of recession in the global economy this year is raised to 60%, up from 40%,” he said in a note to clients.

National Security Agency Head Fired

General Timothy Haugh, the director of the National Security Agency, which oversees the critical wiretapping and cyberespionage operations, was fired on Thursday, according to The Washington Post.

Haugh, who also leads the U.S. Cyber Command, was dismissed along with his civilian deputy at the NSA, Wendy Noble, the officials said.

Three former officials said Haugh was notified of his dismissal while traveling. One official also noted that neither Haugh nor Noble was given a reason for their removal — only that “your services are no longer required”.

The firings were pushed by far-right activist Laura Loomer, as she confirmed to The Washington Post that she suggested the same during a meeting with President Donald Trump on Wednesday. However, Trump denied that Loomer recommended terminations.

Loomer, a vocal Trump supporter, urged the dismissal of several officials of the National Security Council staff who she deemed disloyal to the president. As a result, Trump has ousted at least five members of the NSC.

Nearly Half of U.S. Startups in 2024 Have Female Founders

New data from payroll and HR firm Gusto reveals that women led nearly half of all new businesses launched in 2024, while minority ownership also saw steady growth.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau shows that 1.7 million new business applications were filed in 2024. The Gusto survey shows women led 49% of these startups, marking a 69% increase in female entrepreneurship since 2019 — the largest jump since Gusto began tracking the trend five years ago.

However, despite their growing presence in entrepreneurship, female founders continue to face a funding gap. According to venture capital tracking firm PitchBook, startups led solely by women secured just 1% of total VC funding in 2024, highlighting a persistent disparity in investor backing.

Even then, entrepreneurial momentum remains strong, with new business applications holding steady and diversity among founders continuing to grow. The survey also found a 16% increase in Asian Pacific business owners since 2019, while Latinx and Black entrepreneurs saw rises of 25% and 66%, respectively.
