Trump, EU Tariffs Talks Halt

President Donald Trump said Sunday he’s agreed to delay a 50% tariff on European Union imports until July 9, following a “very nice call” with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
“(Von der Leyen) said she wants to get down to serious negotiation,” Trump told reporters in New Jersey. “July 9 would be the day, that was the date she requested. Could we move it from June 1 to July 9? I agreed to do that… She said we will rapidly get together and see if we can work something out,” he added. In depth explainer on the deal.
Trump had previously stated he was “not looking for a deal” and reaffirmed that the 50% tariff would take effect June 1. That move followed an earlier 20% tariff imposed in April, which, like others before it, had also been delayed.
Russia’s Massive Drone Attacks on Ukraine
A large-scale Russian drone and missile strike on Kyiv, one of the largest offensives in Russia’s war on Ukraine, early on Saturday injured at least 15 people. Hours later, Russia and Ukraine exchanged 307 prisoners each in a rare moment of cooperation. With more releases expected, the swap could become the war’s largest to date.
Responding to the attack, President Donald Trump on Sunday condemned President Vladimir Putin saying he may impose additional sanctions in response. The escalation came as both sides were negotiating a cease-fire deal. “He’s killing a lot of people, and I don’t know what the hell happened to Putin,” Trump said before boarding Air Force One in New Jersey. “I’ve known him a long time. Always gotten along with him. But he’s sending rockets into cities and killing people, and I don’t like it at all.”
He added, “We’re in the middle of talking, and he’s shooting rockets into Kyiv and other cities.” Later on social media, Trump wrote that Putin “has gone absolutely CRAZY” and was attacking Ukrainian cities “for no reason whatsoever.”
U.S. Ranks First — in Swearing
A new study finds that Americans use more swear words online than people in other English-speaking countries. Researchers in Australia analyzed nearly 2 billion words from 1.8 million web pages across 20 countries. They focused on 597 vulgar words, including misspellings and variations, to understand how people use profanity in writing. It’s the first large-scale analysis of its kind.
Benedikt Schweinberger and Kate Burridge wrote in the journal Lingua, “Rather than being a simple, easily definable phenomenon, vulgarity proves to be a complex and multifaceted linguistic phenomenon.” They added, “… As [Charles] Darwin observed, humans have a deep-seated craving for novelty and expressiveness, and they are constantly reimagining and adapting the aesthetics of their expressions. Vulgar language is the natural playground for unleashing this linguistic creativity.”
Close behind were Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, Malaysia, and Ireland. While the study mainly measured the total number of swear words used in each country, Schweinberger said Australians were more conservative online — despite their reputation for swearing.
